Astrology Basics

Astrology is the divination of the [supposed] influences of the stars and planets on human affairs and terrestrial events by their positions and relationships to each other. Sounds like a lot, doesn't it?

 

Many of us know what "sign" we are, our "Sun sign". It represents the position the sun occupied at the moment of our birth. In the Tropical Zodiac used here in the United States, there are twelve astrological signs, beginning with the first day of Spring (Aries) and ending with the last day of winter (Pisces).

 

Every sign is associated with an element--either fire, earth, air, or water--and a quality--cardinal (leadership and movement), fixed (determined and stubborn), and mutable (flexible and transitional). Each of the 12 signs is a unique combination of an element and a quality.

 

I've provided some of the more basic sign information below. As your read it over, here are a few caveats:

 

1) Astrology is a complex discipline, and professional astrologers make it their life's work and study. It is a lot more than just dividing up the planet into twelve types of people. The planets and their positions play a significant role in the individuals astrological makeup, and it's so unique that it's like having a "fingerprint". The only person with the exact same chart as you would be a twin.

2) Astrology doesn't tell the whole story; it will show trends and tendencies. But an astrological sign is not an excuse for bad behavior, nor does it take into account your upbringing, life experience and a host of other factors.

3) Astrology can also be used to plan future events, look at romantic compatibility, and improve business success, to name just a few of its uses.
